When Deauveion enrolled in the High School Equivalency (HSE) program, she carried more uncertainty than confidence. Quiet by nature, she often hesitated when her facilitator asked who was ready to schedule an exam. Each time, Deauveion chose to wait, convinced she needed just a little more time to prepare.
Eventually, she decided to take a chance on herself.
With understandable nerves, Deauveion sat for the Science exam and passed. It was more than a passing score. It was proof that she belonged in the testing room. Her confidence began to grow, and so did her participation in class. She started asking questions, seeking additional resources, and celebrating each milestone, including an impressive score of 12 on her Social Studies exam.
Then came mathematics.
When Deauveion received a score of 7, missing a passing score by just one point, disappointment set in. Rather than letting the setback define her, she worked with her facilitator to identify the areas that needed the most attention. Armed with targeted practice tests, additional instructional videos, and renewed determination, she returned to the testing center ready for another attempt.
This time, she earned a remarkable score of 15, one of the highest math scores her facilitator had seen. From that moment forward, the doubt that once held her back gave way to confidence. She passed each of her remaining exams on the first attempt and proudly earned her High School Equivalency diploma.
Today, Deauveion is looking ahead to continuing her education as she builds a brighter future for herself and her children, carrying with her the confidence she discovered one test at a time.
